Quartz Marine-
Chronometer
Edition 1994

30 years of Mühle-Glashütte GmbH, 30 years of the Quartz Marine Chronometer! In 1994, Hans-Jürgen Mühle reestablished his family’s company and introduced a new marine chronometer. To celebrate our 30th anniversary in 2024, we proudly present this legendary measuring instrument as the Edition 1994, featuring special highlights – and limited to just 30 pieces.

Not only does Nautische Instrumente Mühle-Glashütte celebrate its 30th anniversary this year, but so does our Quartz Marine Chronometer. This instrument holds a special place in our history, as the reestablishment of Mühle-Glashütte GmbH in 1994 was driven by the desire to continue the production of marine chronometers in Glashütte after it had been discontinued.

The reestablishment followed a series of historic company events, culminating in Hans-Jürgen Mühle starting the design of a new marine chronometer in 1994 – with just two employees. In the years that followed, this milestone laid the foundation for what Mühle-Glashütte stands for today: functional wristwatches inspired by the nautical virtues of precision, reliability, and outstanding legibility.

An instrument for navigation

At sea, precision, reliability, and excellent legibility are paramount. The Quartz Marine Chronometer achieves outstanding accuracy through meticulously crafted mechanical components combined with dependable electronics. At its core lies a specially selected, artificially aged, and temperature-stabilized 4.19 MHz quartz oscillator. This ensures an average time deviation of less than 0.01 seconds per day.

Without interruption

A marine chronometer on board a ship displays the Universal Time Coordinated (UTC) required for navigation. By comparing it with the local time, the longitude of the ship’s position is determined. To ensure the UTC time remains accurate even during a battery change, the marine chronometer continues to run for at least 5 minutes without interruption, even without a battery. Therefore, no resetting of the time is necessary. Similarly, no maintenance of the movement is required, as both the mechanics and electronics are designed for years of continuous operation.

A modern appearance

The Quartz Marine Chronometer Edition 1994 combines Glashütte watchmaking craftsmanship with modern design. Its cream-white dial, accentuated by a Mühle-blue minute track and golden design elements, allows for precise and glare-free reading of the time. Special features such as the golden “30,” the modified “155” instead of “55,” and the limited edition number in the small seconds subdial emphasize its exclusive nature. Gold-plated hands, an elegant mahogany case in classic chronometer dimensions, and two special engravings beneath the push-button and on the dial plate complete the design – making the Quartz Marine Chronometer a true masterpiece of our craftsmanship.
