When you build wristwatches for more than 25 years, many smaller and larger anniversaries come together. In 2022, for example, the S.A.R. Rescue Timer celebrated its anniversary in service with the sea rescuers – and our woodpecker neck regulation is now doing the honours.

Of course, you can’t look at them in isolation from each other. Especially with our sporty timepieces and tool watches, the shockproof regulation is of great advantage.

From swan to woodpecker

Von Mühle-Glashütte entwickelte

For our nautical wristwatches, we need a very shock-resistant fine adjustment. It should not only enable fine regulation, but also make a Mühle movement more resistant. So we refined the conventional Glashütte fine regulation. The result: the shock-resistant woodpecker neck fine regulation. We applied for a patent for this on 7 June 2003. In the meantime, we have been using it for 20 years and it soon became state of the art - as they say in patent law. It owes its name to the characteristically shaped spring.

Our specially shaped woodpecker neck spring (2) prevents the regulator arm (3) from moving upwards. To do this, it engages in a semicircular recess in the regulator arm. In this way, it reliably holds it in position on the balance cock (1). The fine adjustment screw (4) is also held in place by a clamping screw (5) to prevent it from turning.

Robust

A stronger shock can cause the regulator arm between the regulating screw and the counter-pressure spring to jump upwards in conventional fine regulations. This can change the position of the balance staff or the regulation of the watch. Our specially shaped woodpecker neck spring prevents the regulator arm from moving upwards by engaging in a semi-circular recess in the regulator arm. In this way, it not only presses the regulator arm sideways against the fine adjustment screw, but also downwards onto the balance cock at the same time.

Thanks to its specially shaped end, the woodpecker neck spring engages in a semicircular recess in the woodpecker neck hand. In this way, the regulator arm is not only pressed laterally against the fine adjustment screw, but also downwards onto the balance cock.

fine adjustment

The fine adjustment of a mechanical watch is called regulation. Two methods have become established for regulation: changing the length of the hairspring and the moment of inertia of the balance. The former is more common and is also used here. By changing the position of the regulator arm, the balance spring is shortened or lengthened. If the balance spring is shorter, the balance oscillates faster, if it is longer, it oscillates correspondingly slower. With the help of a time scale, the watchmaker can see how moving the regulator arm affects the rate and act accordingly.
30 years since our refoundation.

Time to celebrate.
